Turnitin
Turnitin Feedback Studio is an anti-plagiarism text checking system
Turnitin is an anti-plagiarism system or a tool for verification of the originality of a text. Its primary purpose is to prevent plagiarism. The system helps improve the quality of academic work and provides information and tools needed for adequate verification of submitted work.
The tool compares submitted works with an extensive database of documents, including not only freely accessible websites but also licensed sources and thesis repositories. It is one of the most commonly used software for detecting plagiarism. Besides the online version, you can also find Turnitin Feedback Studio as a plugin in Moodle for even more effective verification of your work.
Turnitin is for:
- students who will encounter it in their lessons or bachelor/diploma seminars,
- authors and academics who want to verify the originality of their article before publishing it in a scientific journal.
How can you check the originality of your text or student work?
In the drop-down text below, you can read simple instructions on checking the uniqueness of your text or submitted student work in Turnitin or Moodle (please note, only one file can be submitted and checked here).
- Turnitin — offers advanced text control options (selection of the databases you will compare the document to in the anti-plagiarism check) and the ability to upload multiple files. This solution is suitable for academics and doctoral students.
- Turnitin in the Moodle environment — offers a quick check of the submitted text. There is a possibility to upload only one file. This solution is suitable for students.
Instructions for using Turnitin
- Start by pressing the button below
Open TURNITIN
and then log in using your university credentials (which you use for logging in to STAG or Offfice365). - The default language is English. To better understand the results of the checks, you can switch to any of the supported languages in the main menu.
- Employees are automatically assigned the instructor role after logging in. For a quick check of employee documents, you can use the quick checkout feature, which allows you to check your records without using tasks and classes.
- The first step is to enable the “Quick Submit” button within your instructor account. Once logged in, click on your name in the main menu.
- Should any student need to activate this feature to check their texts, please send an email to itspravce@k.utb.cz, and we will change their account to an instructor account.
- Once you have successfully set up the quick submit button, it will appear in the main course overview menu. You can do the check by clicking on the “Quick Submit” button. Click the “Submit” button above the table with the submitted and checked works list.
- In the dialogue box, select the databases you will compare the document to in the anti-plagiarism check – we recommend choosing the Internet and Periodicals, journals & publications options. When checking student papers, you can also select the remaining databases.
Warning: If you, as an author of a scientific article, are sending your article for review before sending it to the editors, make sure that you select the option Submit papers to: no archive (see image). If you fail to do this and send the article to the “standard archive”, then during the anti-plagiarism check, the editor of the journal will see a 100% match (the final version of the article that you will send to the journal with the version of the article that you are now sending for review), which means explaining to you, delay and possibly refusal to publish the article.
Then click on the “Submit” button.
- Select whether you are uploading one or more files, uploading a compressed zip file, or using the “Copy and Paste” method.
- Enter your first name, last name, and the submission title under which Turnitin will check the work. Then submit the file by clicking on “Upload”.
- On the next page, the system will inform you about the successful upload of the document.
- Next comes the actual check of your work. The length of the review depends on the size of your document, the selected databases, and the current server load. Usually, it finishes within a few minutes.
- In the list of the submitted documents, colour and percentage indicate the similarity. The colour of the report icon indicates the similarity index of the paper based on the amount of matching or similar text detected. The percentage range is from 0 to 100 %. The similarity indication is as follows:
- You can view the detailed results of the check with notes and explanations by clicking on the document title. Note: Turnitin will not generate a new similarity report until 24 hours later for rewritten or resubmitted papers. This delay is automatic. It allows the document to be resubmitted and created correctly without comparing it to the previous draft.
Please note: The Turnitin tool does not express whether a work is original or not by the similarity report. The similarity reports only help find texts similar to the submitted papers. It is pretty common to find matches with our databases in submitted work. Also, an author who cites and lists sources correctly will have parts of their work marked as matching. It is advisable to determine whether the document is plagiarism only after careful consideration and a thorough review of the work submitted and the suspected sources following the course and institution standards.
Deleting a submission
A common issue when submitting an article is a match with a previous version of the same article that you or your co-author submitted for review previously. The default setting for the “Quick submit” feature is “Submit papers to: standard repository”. Avoid the problem by choosing “no repository”.
Only the person who made the previous submission can delete it. Log in to the system (turnitin.utb.cz) and on the home page you will see the list of submissions you made. Check the ones you want to delete. A menu will appear where you select “Delete” and “Request permanent deletion”.
Instructions for using Turnitin in Moodle

Open MOODLE
and then log in using your university credentials (which you use for logging in to STAG or Offfice365). - In the courses overview, select the “Různé” option and then select the “Kontrola-Turnitin Antiplagiátorská kontrola pomocí Turnitinu”.

Turnitin will not generate a new similarity report until 24 hours later for rewritten or resubmitted papers. This delay is automatic. It allows the document to be resubmitted and created correctly without comparing it to the previous draft.
- You can view the detailed results of the check with notes and explanations by clicking on the document title or the similarity percentage.
- With the interactive tool, you can view specific parts of the text and get detailed information about the similarity of the document.
