Maintenance and Protection of Library Collections

The Library collections (with the exception of long-term loans) are divided into several parts located on the respective floors of the Library. The second floor houses the self-service loans where users can borrow documents and take them out of the Library. The reading room for textbooks is on the third floor, the reading rooms for newspapers and journals is on the fourth floor. Documents located on the third and fourth floor are intended for reference use in the Library only. The Library collections are arranged according to subject using the Universal Decimal Classification and the ‘Konspekt’ method; each subject is represented by a classification number. Documents stored in the depository or in the archive are accessible only through the Library catalogue upon request. All collections are continuously updated and organized in such a manner that one copy of each title is available in the reading room; other copies are placed in the self-service loans section. Older documents and less requested publications are stored in the depository. Older editions of newspapers and journals and diploma theses are stored in the archive. A separate collection involves publications placed in the reading room of the Faculty of Logistics and Management in Uherské Hradiště.

The care of the Library collection includes maintenance and organization of the collections, book jacketing, labelling and chip protection, repair and rebinding of damaged documents. Minor repairs are carried out by the Library, rebinding of documents is carried out by an external contractor.

The Library continuously monitors the recency of the collections and discards library materials. The following documents are discarded: Outdated publications replaced by new editions or by other titles, unwanted duplicates, damaged and worn out documents, publications which do not correspond to the specialization of the Library, lost documents. When discarding books, the Library acts in compliance with § 17 of the Library Act No. 257/2001 Coll. and with the Decree of the Ministry of Culture No. 88/2002 Coll. implementing the Library Act.
